So it finally happened and we chose the same poet. Whoops. Here’s some poetry inspired by Marilyn Singer!

Fish and Slugs
Kissing you makes your lips glug.
I wonder if you’d kiss a slug.
Salamanders
Kissing you will be slippery.
So I’ll practice with a whipparee.
Sunlight Warms the Snake’s Skin
sunlight warms the snake’s skin
the river is flowing
the warm sun is glowing
the forest full of bees sounds great to him
so if you go visit
try not to make a sound
don’t crunch or break or crack
and he will teach you
what woods are all about
April is a Dog’s Dream
april is a dog’s dream
with birds singing sweetly
with lawns trimmed neatly
with bugs flying about the pollen air
so come on everyone
we’re walking around the block
to run and race and wrestle
and you will play with me
under the spring sun
Lion
I can roar.
What’s more,
I roughly purr
like a tiger,
and when I sleep
my kittens creep,
and in my dreams
the warm sun beams.
I will chase
my own food
my own tail
my own pride.
All lions I know of
will make a show of
their stride.
Cats
I prefer
warm fur,
sunshine skies
where heat is prized,
a thread of lace
that I can chase,
something of prey
so we can play.
I want mist
on my wrist
on my chest
on my hide.
No cat I remember
spends the summer
inside.
